A fire broke out in a high-rise residential block on the St John’s Estate in Hackney on Wednesday afternoon, prompting a swift emergency response from the London Fire Brigade.
Five fire engines and around 35 firefighters were dispatched to the scene after reports of a blaze in an eighth-floor flat. The Brigade’s Control Officers received the first call at 3:00pm and immediately mobilised crews from Shadwell, Bethnal Green, Stoke Newington, Dockhead, and Holloway fire stations.
Firefighters quickly brought the situation under control, with the flames extinguished by 3:45pm.
Part of the eighth-floor flat sustained damage, but fortunately, there were no reports of any injuries.
A spokesperson for London Fire Brigade confirmed:
“Crews worked rapidly to contain the fire and prevent further spread within the building. Thankfully, no one was hurt.”
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
Residents in the area expressed relief that the incident was managed swiftly, and no evacuations beyond the affected unit were necessary. The high-rise building remains structurally safe, and local authorities are now working with fire investigators to determine the cause of the incident.
The London Fire Brigade continues to urge residents in high-rise properties to ensure they are familiar with their building’s fire safety procedures and to report any concerns promptly.
