A large fire broke out on the roof of a luxury apartment building in New York City’s Hudson Yards neighbourhood today, sending thick black smoke billowing across the Manhattan skyline. The fire was reported at approximately noon at The Set, a high-rise at 455 10th Avenue and West 35th Street, with emergency crews quickly responding to the scene.
Around 80 firefighters from the New York Fire Department (FDNY) were deployed to tackle the blaze, which erupted on the building’s rooftop. Photos and videos shared on social media captured plumes of smoke visible from miles away, drawing widespread attention and concern. New York City Council member Erik Bottcher shared an update from Hudson Yards management on X/Twitter, confirming that the fire had been “fully contained” and that no injuries were reported.
Local resident Jade Nash described the scene, tweeting, “A building in Hudson Yards is burning right now. Took these images from my bedroom and called 911. Prayers.” Another witness remarked, “A large fire has erupted from the roof of a midtown Manhattan skyscraper filling the skies over New York City with thick smoke.”
The FDNY has since given an “all clear,” and firefighters have begun departing the scene. Traffic around Hudson Yards was briefly impacted as responders worked to secure the area and assess any structural risks.
As the cause of the fire remains under investigation, city authorities have thanked the FDNY for their swift response in containing the blaze and ensuring public safety.
