Fire Crews Tackle Unattended Bonfire in Dover as Fire Safety Warning Issued

Kent Fire and Rescue Service responded to an out-of-control bonfire in Dover on Friday evening (9 May 2025), prompting a public warning as warmer temperatures increase fire risk across the county.

Crews were called to Drop Redoubt Road at 6:53pm after reports of an unattended and escalating bonfire. Two fire engines were dispatched to the scene, and high-pressure hose reel jets were used to bring the flames under control by 7:31pm.

Fortunately, there were no reported injuries.

Fire Service Safety Reminder

Following the incident, Kent Fire and Rescue issued a safety advisory for residents planning outdoor burning:

“Bonfires must always be closely supervised. In dry, warmer weather, flames can spread rapidly and pose significant danger to nearby property and greenery.”

They offered the following tips for safe bonfire management:

  • Keep bonfires small and manageable
  • Build away from fences, sheds, trees and buildings
  • Supervise the fire at all times
  • Keep a hosepipe or bucket of water close by
  • Call 999 immediately if a bonfire gets out of control

Preventing Further Incidents

The service’s warning follows a recent uptick in bonfire-related incidents as residents make use of the spring weather. Firefighters urge residents to follow guidance to avoid unnecessary emergency callouts and potential hazards to life and property.
