Fire Crews called to free Trapped Person on Bedford High Street

Fire Crews from Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue are currently in attendance at an incident on Bedford High street. This is an Road traffic collision involving 1 vehicle. Crews have been sent from Bedford and are in attendance along with a Specialist Rescue Unit from Kempston they are working with partners from Bedfordshire police East of England Ambulance Service. It is understood that a manhole cover somehow blew up with a car on top of it, This closure has also affected St Paul’s Square. Until the road is re-opened please board any buses from the Bus Station. That the advice being given by Bedfordshire Police. Bedfordshire fire and rescue have issued the following update:If you have a low suspension car it’s best to avoid Bedford High Street at the moment. Roadworks have caused manhole covers to be raised above their normal level and a woman had to be cut from a low suspension car yesterday (21 March 2018) after it hit one, setting off its airbags. Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service received a call at 14.33 about the incident after a sound like an explosion was heard in the centre of Bedford. When firefighters from Bedford and Kempston arrived on the scene they found Seat Leon FR that had hit a manhole cover outside Wilkinson’s, setting off its airbags and trapping a woman in the vehicle. They closed the High Street and Mill Street while they extricated her from the vehicle, using their Holmatro cutting equipment to completely remove the roof of the car. She was then taken from the vehicle using a long board to support her and passed into the care of paramedics
