A farmer is currently being questioned on suspicion of murder and attempted murder following a shooting incident that resulted in the death of a 19-year-old man during a reported burglary in Derbyshire.

Derbyshire Police responded to reports of a burglary at Eccles Road in Whaley Bridge at 01:20 BST on Wednesday. Upon arrival, officers discovered a 19-year-old man with fatal gunshot wounds and another teenager with a gunshot wound nearby.

The man who lost his life has been identified locally as Marcus Smith, a resident of the area known for his involvement in local football and DJ appearances at a nearby pub.

A man in his 50s was detained on suspicion of murder and attempted murder in connection with the incident.

While authorities are keeping an open mind about the events, they are investigating whether the shooting is linked to a reported burglary at the property around 3.30pm on Tuesday.

Residents in Whaley Bridge expressed shock and concern over the incident. Keely Tomlinson, 25, remarked on the rarity of such events in the typically quiet town, expressing concern for the community’s safety.

Dave Arnfield, 65, echoed the sentiments, calling the shooting “totally unexpected” and emphasizing the sadness of a life lost.

Simon Barnwell, 60, noted the unusual nature of such a violent event in the area, highlighting the increased security measures residents have taken in response.

Police investigations continue at the scene, with officers stating that the process may take some time given the complexity of the situation.

Divisional commander Ch Supt Dave Kirby expressed gratitude to the community for their cooperation and assured residents that the incident appeared to be targeted rather than random.

The man arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder remains in custody, while the seriously injured teenager, also suspected of aggravated burglary, is receiving treatment in the hospital. Another man, arrested on suspicion of aggravated burglary, remains in custody following a vehicle stop.

The police urge anyone with information related to the incident to come forward to assist with the ongoing investigation.
