The family of a former Heathrow Airport security guard, Thomas Longhurst, is appealing for information following his death from mesothelioma, an incurable cancer caused by asbestos exposure. Mr. Longhurst, known as Tom, passed away in February 2022 at the age of 73, just months after his diagnosis in 2021.

Decades of Service at Heathrow Airport

Tom Longhurst worked at Heathrow Airport, primarily in Terminal 3, from 1985 until his retirement in 2016. It is believed he was exposed to asbestos during a significant programme of maintenance and construction works in the 1980s and early 1990s. His family suspects that these activities, particularly the disturbance of asbestos materials by contractors, led to his fatal illness.

Family’s Heartfelt Appeal

In a statement, the Longhurst family said:
*”Thomas served many loyal, hardworking years at Heathrow. He was just starting to settle into his retirement and was excited to meet his new grandchildren – who he sadly never met. Following his diagnosis, Thomas had just a few short months filled with pain and suffering.

An otherwise fit and active man who loved cycling, sports, and walking, Thomas’ decline was rapid, and his life was cut tragically short. Our husband, dad, and grandad is missed beyond measure. We would very much appreciate any information from anyone who can help us understand what happened.”*

Legal Investigation Underway

Industrial disease specialists Leigh Day have been instructed to investigate the circumstances surrounding Mr. Longhurst’s asbestos exposure. Louisa Saville, an asbestos claims solicitor at Leigh Day, said:
“We are hoping to help Thomas’ family by locating others who worked at Heathrow Terminal 3 between 1985 and 2016 and may have witnessed or been involved in construction works that disturbed asbestos.”

She added: “Any information, no matter how small, will be greatly appreciated by Thomas’ widow and family.”
