Emergency services were called to Sherwood Road in Mitcham this afternoon Saturday 19th April 2025 after a large tree collapsed onto the front porch of an elderly couple’s home, trapping them inside the property.
Fire crews from the London Fire Brigade attended the scene and used cutting equipment and saws to remove branches and debris, eventually gaining access to the home and rescuing the couple.

The tree, believed to have been weakened by heavy rain and wind, fell across the entrance, leaving the pair unable to exit.
The couple were treated at the scene by emergency responders. It is currently unclear whether they sustained any injuries. The London Ambulance Service has been contacted for further details.
The tree remains resting in the couple’s front garden as local authorities assess the damage and determine the next steps for removal.
An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
