Eastern Road Closed as Man Climbs Scaffolding in Brighton

Eastern Road in Brighton, near the Royal Sussex County Hospital (RSCH), has been closed in both directions as emergency services respond to reports of a man climbing scaffolding around a building.

The incident has led to the closure of the road between Paston Place and Sudley Place, with police and other emergency responders on the scene. Authorities are urging drivers and pedestrians to avoid the area while they manage the situation.

A spokesperson for Sussex Police said: “Officers are currently responding to a report of a man scaling scaffolding around a building in Eastern Road, Brighton. The road is currently closed in both directions between Paston Place and Sudley Place. Drivers and pedestrians are asked to avoid the area at this time.”

There is currently no information on the motivations or intentions of the individual involved. The emergency services,are working to bring the situation to a safe resolution.

Local traffic has been disrupted, with delays reported in the surrounding streets as motorists seek alternative routes. Residents are advised to plan their journeys carefully and avoid the Eastern Road area until further notice.

Brighton and Hove buses have diversions for buses in place:

Due to a road closure at Eastern Road, all services that use Eastern Road are diverted via Eaton Place, A259 and Lower/Upper Rock Gardens in Both directions:

Service 23’s are using Lewes Crescent (Sussex Square) in both directions.

Service 1 and 1X will be turning left into Arundel Road to resume normal route to the Marina or Whitehawk, when leaving the Marina they will use the slip road straight onto the Seafront towards Brighton and then use Rock Gardens.

Service 14 and 14C are using the A259 (seafront) in both directions.

Service 7 will be diverting Westbound (towards the Marina) from St James’s Street Via Rock Gardens, Marine Parade (A259) and Eaton Place to resume normal route at Chesham Street, Eastern Road.

The Eastbound diversion (Towards George Street) from Brighton Marina will be via the Marina Slip Road onto Marine Parade (A259) and then turn right onto Rock Gardens to resume normal route at Devonshire Place, Edward Street.
