East Sussex Man Jailed for 10 Years After Stabbing Partner in the Neck with Scissors

A 38-year-old mechanic from Blackboys has been sentenced to ten years in prison for a violent attack on his partner, in which he stabbed her in the neck with a pair of scissors.

Luke Berry Sentenced for Grievous Bodily Harm with Intent

Luke Berry, of School Lane, Blackboys, was sentenced at Hove Crown Court on Thursday, August 1, after pleading guilty to causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

Berry will be required to serve two-thirds of his sentence before he is eligible for parole. Additionally, he will remain on licence for four years beyond his release, meaning he will be under strict supervision.

A restraining order was also issued against him, prohibiting all contact with the victim indefinitely.

Brutal Attack on His Partner After She Ended the Relationship

The court heard that Berry and his 27-year-old victim had been in a six-month relationship before she decided to end things. Refusing to accept her decision, Berry lost control and launched a sustained and brutal attack.

The victim was punched in the head repeatedly in the kitchen before she managed to break free and run toward the front door. However, Berry caught up with her, dragged her into the living room, and stabbed her in the neck with a pair of scissors.

She also sustained wounds behind her ear and on her hand during the attack.

Despite the severity of her injuries, she was able to escape and get help. She later required four stitches to the wound in her neck.

Judge Condemns “Murderous Rage” and History of Abuse

Sentencing Berry, Judge Paul Tain described the attack as “unequivocally sustained,” stating:

“I am in no doubt that you were overcome by a murderous rage, and using scissors in the manner you did could have caused death.”

The judge also highlighted Berry’s previous convictions, which demonstrated a history of controlling and coercive behaviour in past relationships.

Detective Praises Victim’s Bravery

Detective Constable Tania Snashall, from the East Sussex Safeguarding Investigations Unit, who led the case, emphasized that the victim was lucky to have survived the attack:

**“It was only down to sheer good fortune that the victim survived this attack, in a situation that could have been fatal.

“This was a horrific experience for her, made worse by the fact that it was inflicted by someone she had trusted.

“Understandably, this will take time for her to recover from both physically and psychologically, but this sentence will hopefully allow her to begin rebuilding her life.”**

Call for Domestic Abuse Victims to Seek Help

DC Snashall urged anyone in abusive relationships to seek support:

**“Domestic abuse should never be tolerated, and this is one abuser who will now serve a significant custodial sentence for his crime.

“This case shows that you do not need to suffer in silence. Help is available.

If you or someone you know is in an abusive relationship, you can contact police online or by calling 101 to speak confidentially with experienced detectives.

“If you feel threatened or in immediate danger, always call 999.”**
