Drivers Warned of Overnight Closures on M2 Motorway for Week of Roadworks

Motorists using the M2 motorway in Kent are advised to plan alternative routes as the road undergoes a week of overnight closures for essential maintenance.

The closures, affecting the stretch between Junction 5 (Stockbury, Sheppey, and Sittingbourne) and Junction 6 (near Faversham), began on Monday, January 20, and will continue through Friday, January 24. Work is scheduled between 8 pm and 6 am each night, with both directions impacted on different days.

Reasons for Closure

The closures are part of ongoing bridge works and other infrastructure upgrades aimed at improving safety and road conditions. Nearby roads, including the A249 and A2, are also affected by related closures for structural repairs and junction improvements.

Additional Closures on the M20

The M20 motorway is also experiencing disruption, with multiple sections, slip roads, and bridges subject to closures for maintenance and upgrades. This includes survey works, barrier repairs, and bridge maintenance near Junctions 5 to 8.

M2 Closure Schedule

  • Tuesday: Eastbound closure between Junction 5 and Junction 6 (8 pm–6 am).
  • Wednesday–Friday: Westbound closures from Junction 6 to Junction 5 (8 pm–6 am).
  • Thursday–Friday: Eastbound Junction 4 exit slip closed for structural works; Junction 5 entry slip closed for inspections.
  • Sunday: Eastbound Junction 2 exit slip closed for inspections; Junction 6 entry slip closed for maintenance.

Impacts on Local Roads

In addition to the M2 and M20, closures on the A249 for Grovehurst Road improvements, and other routes such as the Dartford Crossing, are expected to cause delays.

Highways Agency Statement

A National Highways spokesperson said:
“These closures are essential to ensure the safety and reliability of the motorway network. We advise all road users to check for updates and allow extra travel time.

Advice for Motorists

Drivers are encouraged to follow diversion routes and use the National Highways website or traffic monitoring apps for real-time updates on closures and congestion.

Broader Context

These works are part of a series of maintenance and infrastructure upgrades across the UK, with similar disruptions reported on the M602 near Eccles, Greater Manchester.

Motorists are urged to remain patient and plan ahead to avoid delays
