In a breakthrough development, the Metropolitan Police’s forensic scientists have utilized cutting-edge DNA techniques to crack a cold case murder that had remained unsolved for three decades. This scientific advancement has led to the conviction of Sandip Patel, the perpetrator of a heinous crime committed in 1994.
The victim, Marina Koppel, was brutally stabbed at her Westminster flat, enduring over 140 wounds. For years, the case baffled investigators, but recent advancements in forensic science have finally unravelled the mystery.

Patel, now 51 years old, was found guilty of Marina’s murder at the Old Bailey on Thursday, February 15. He is set to be sentenced at the same court on Friday, February 16, facing a potential life sentence for his gruesome crime.

Operational Forensic Manager Dan Chester, who spearheaded the investigation, emphasized the importance of collaborative efforts and innovative techniques in solving historic murders. He praised the relentless dedication of forensic scientists, fingerprint experts, and investigators, all of whom played pivotal roles in unravelling Marina’s murder.

Marina, a 39-year-old woman, led an unconventional yet fulfilling life, splitting her time between her Westminster flat and her husband’s residence in Northampton. Despite working as a masseuse and occasionally engaging in sex work, Marina shared a loving relationship with her husband and was a devoted mother to her children in Columbia.

On the fateful day of August 8, 1994, Marina’s husband made a grisly discovery at her flat, prompting immediate police intervention. The crime scene yielded vital evidence, including a ring adorned with a single hair. However, it wasn’t until recent years, with advancements in DNA profiling, that this hair linked Patel to the murder.
Further investigation revealed additional incriminating evidence, including Patel’s fingerprints on a plastic shopping bag found at the scene. His subsequent arrest in January 2023, coupled with fingerprint and DNA matches, solidified the case against him.

Marina’s family, though devastated by her untimely death, expressed relief and closure upon Patel’s conviction. Her sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Mary and Martin Koppel, fondly remembered Marina as a vibrant and compassionate individual whose absence was deeply felt by all who knew her.
Detective Superintendent Katherine Goodwin hailed the breakthrough as a significant milestone in seeking justice for victims of violent crimes. She extended her sympathies to Marina’s family and friends, acknowledging the profound impact of her loss and expressing hope that the verdict would offer some solace.
While the motive behind Marina’s murder may never be fully understood, Patel’s conviction serves as a testament to the unwavering commitment of law enforcement in pursuing justice, even decades after the crime was committed.
