PD Billy Tracks Down Bognor Drugs and Knife Suspect ?
In the early hours of November 28, 2023, Sussex Policeās canine unit sprang into action. Reports of drug dealing and antisocial behaviour in Bognor Regis prompted an intensified patrol in the residential areas of Hastings Close and Trinity Way.
Enter PD Billy, a five-year-old German Shepherd whoās been with the force since he was just eight months old. When officers spotted a hooded figure fleeing into the darkness around 1:10āÆam, they unleashed Billyās expert tracking skills. Within moments, the suspect was located hiding between two propertiesāa remarkable demonstration of canine agility and training.
Billyās assistance didnāt stop there. Once the suspect was in custody, officers discovered a concealed bag containing cannabis, scales, ādeal bagsā and, crucially, a knife wedged beneath concrete slabs in the alleywayāall thanks to Billyās keen nose.
The suspect, later identified as 20āyearāold James Boden, of Queens Field West, Bognor, faced trial at Worthing Magistratesā Court. On MarchāÆ12, he pled guilty to possession of a bladed article in public and possession of cannabis after running from police.
At his sentencing hearing on JulyāÆ3, Boden received a community order. He must complete 120āÆhours of unpaid work, cover Ā£150 in court costs, and pay a Ā£114 surcharge.
