Deadly Collision in Bolivian Andes Claims 22 Lives

A devastating head-on collision between a truck and a bus on a highway in the Bolivian Andes has resulted in the deaths of 22 people and injuries to 16 others, marking the country’s worst road accident of the year, according to police.

The crash occurred on a road between the town of Patacamaya in Bolivia and Tambo Quemado in northern Chile. The bus was en route to Chile, travelling along a busy commercial and tourism route that connects the two South American countries.

Investigation Details

Initial investigations indicate that the truck crossed into the opposite lane while attempting to overtake another vehicle. Traffic officer Nilo Torrico stated, “This truck made a prohibited manoeuvre and, as a result, we have this unfortunate accident.

Images from the scene shared by Unitel, a Bolivian television channel, showed the bus with its front section completely shattered and the truck similarly smashed. Some bodies were seen on the road, and first responders were working to remove those trapped in the wreckage.

Casualties and Response

Fourteen of the deceased have been identified, and Chile’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that at least one Chilean national was among the victims. Earlier reports indicated that the drivers of both vehicles were also killed in the collision.

Bolivia sees about 1,400 traffic deaths annually, with accidents often attributed to poor driving and mechanical failures. This recent tragedy highlights the ongoing issues with road safety in the region.

Previous Accidents

This incident follows another deadly collision on April 4, where 14 people were killed and two injured on a busy road in southwestern Bolivia.

The Bolivian government and local authorities continue to grapple with the high rate of traffic accidents, working to improve road safety measures and driver education.

Call for Safety

As the investigation continues, officials and safety advocates are urging for stricter enforcement of traffic laws and better vehicle maintenance standards to prevent future tragedies.

The community mourns the loss of life and extends condolences to the families affected by this horrific accident.
