Special Sergeant Niyi Opaleye, a dedicated member of Kent Police’s Special Constabulary, has been honoured with the King’s Police Medal in the King’s Birthday Honours for his remarkable contribution to policing.
A Lifetime of Service
Opaleye, a father of two, has served the Dartford community voluntarily for 25 years while maintaining full-time employment as a scientist. At 53 years old, he becomes only the second Special to receive this prestigious recognition.
“When I first joined Kent Police, I never really expected anything like this,” said Opaleye. “The people in the street always say thank you when I’ve helped them, and my colleagues always say thank you when I’ve done a good job. But it really means a lot that those who nominated me for The King’s Police Medal thought to show their gratitude in this way.”
Community Engagement
As a neighbourhood beat officer, Opaleye has become a familiar and trusted figure in Dartford. “People know who I am, they like to speak to me, and I like to show the human side of policing as much as I can,” he added.
Opaleye originally joined Kent Special Constabulary to serve the community while seeking adventure and new experiences during his studies. “I get a lot of fulfilment in helping people,” he shared.
Recognition and Praise
The King’s Police Medal, presented by His Majesty The King as part of the New Year and Birthday Honours lists, recognises individuals with a distinguished record in policing.
Kent Police Chief Constable Tim Smith expressed his pride: “I am extremely pleased that Niyi’s contribution to policing the county over the last 25 years has been recognised in His Majesty The King’s Birthday Honours List. He has become a real fixture of neighbourhood policing in Dartford, a very friendly and familiar face to officers and the public alike.”
Kent Special Constabulary Chief Officer Gavin McKinnon OBE also praised Opaleye: “Kent Police really values and prioritises neighbourhood policing – it is at the heart of everything we do. S/Sgt Opaleye is highly specialist and experienced in this crucial area and has an incredible track record of tackling criminals, supporting victims, and ensuring he is visible and accessible to local people. I also think you would be hard-pressed to meet a nicer, more genuine guy.”
A Legacy of Dedication
Opaleye’s commitment to policing and his community has left a lasting impact, and his recognition with the King’s Police Medal serves as a testament to his dedication and service.
