A controlled explosion was carried out near the British Museum this morning (October 10) after a suspicious package was discovered on Great Russell Street, close to Montague Street.
The discovery was reported just before 8:45 am, prompting the Metropolitan Police to attend the scene and evacuate the surrounding area as a precaution.
Specialist officers inspected the package, and a controlled explosion was carried out safely. Following the procedure, the package was confirmed to be non-suspicious.
The evacuated area has since been reopened, and the incident has been stood down.
A Metropolitan Police spokesperson said:
“On Thursday, 10 October, police were called at 08:43hrs to WC1 following reports of a suspicious package.
“Officers attended the scene and evacuated the surrounding area as they inspected the package. A controlled explosion was carried out safely by specialist officers. The package was confirmed to be non-suspicious.
“The area has now been re-opened.”
The incident caused minimal disruption in the area, but police thanked the public for their cooperation during the evacuation. The British Museum remains open as usual.
