Controlled Explosion at Chester Station as Bomb Squad Neutralizes Suspicious Package

A bomb squad carried out a controlled explosion near Chester railway station last night after suspicious activity involving two buses raised alarm. Footage captured a bomb disposal robot trundling through the deserted street before detonating the package near a double-decker bus.

The dramatic scene unfolded as the double-decker, hazard lights flashing, sat within a cordoned area while emergency services assessed the threat.

Police Statement and Public Reaction

Cheshire Police confirmed the incident began at 5:09 pm on Friday, November 22, after reports of suspicious activity near Chester railway station and the bus interchange.

“A cordon was put in place, and a number of roads were closed while we investigated the report. EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) attended alongside emergency services to assist,” said a police spokesperson.

Residents and bystanders expressed unease as police secured the area. Witnesses described a sense of “panic,” with one person stating they were told by officers there was “a bomb” and urged to leave the vicinity.

Resolution and Disruption

The controlled explosion neutralized the threat, and police declared the area safe late in the evening.

All was in order, the cordon was released, and roads reopened,” police said, adding, “We understand that this caused some disruption and concern but are happy there is nothing untoward. Thank you for your patience.”

The incident disrupted train and bus services in the area, with routes to Manchester Piccadilly and Manchester Airport particularly affected.

Wider Concerns

The Chester incident followed an earlier security alert at Gatwick Airport, where a suspicious package led to the evacuation of its South Terminal. The alert caused significant disruption, including over 50 flight cancellations. Passengers and staff were seen fleeing the terminal in videos shared online, with some stranded travellers receiving emergency foil blankets as they waited in the cold.

At Chester station, the coordinated response highlighted the readiness of emergency services to manage potential threats. While the situation caused temporary disruption, swift action ensured public safety and avoided escalation.

As investigations continue into both incidents, authorities have reiterated their commitment to ensuring the safety and security of the public.
