Conservative Leadership Race Narrows as Stride Eliminated

In the latest round of voting for the Conservative Party leadership, Mel Stride has been eliminated from the contest, leaving four candidates still in the race to become the next Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.

The results of today’s ballot among Conservative MPs were as follows:

  1. Robert Jenrick: 33 votes
  2. Kemi Badenoch: 28 votes
  3. Tom Tugendhat: 21 votes
  4. James Cleverly: 21 votes
  5. Mel Stride: 16 votes (eliminated)

Stride’s elimination follows that of Dame Priti Patel, who received the fewest votes in the first ballot last week. The remaining four candidates—Jenrick, Badenoch, Tugendhat, and Cleverly—will now proceed to the next stage of the leadership contest.

The candidates are expected to deliver speeches at the Conservative Party conference later this month. MPs will then vote once more to select the final two contenders, with the ultimate decision resting on a vote by the Conservative Party membership.

Robert Jenrick has emerged as the frontrunner in this round, with Kemi Badenoch closely behind. Tom Tugendhat and James Cleverly are tied for third place, keeping the race competitive.

The final result of the leadership election is set to be announced on November 2, when the Conservative Party will name the successor to the outgoing leader, who will take over as Prime Minister.

As the race enters its final stages, attention will now shift to the party conference, where the remaining candidates will have the opportunity to present their visions for the country and rally support from MPs and party members.
