Cold Weather Continues in the UK with Potential Wintry Hazards Ahead – UKNIP

The UK is set to experience another week of cold weather as high-pressure systems dominate the region, bringing temperatures lower than average for this time of year. The weather pattern also indicates reduced rainfall compared to the wet start of January.

This persistent cold and predominantly dry weather will persist throughout much of the week, with southern regions experiencing particularly cold conditions compared to the seasonal norm.

As we approach Sunday, a northerly airflow is expected to develop, increasing the likelihood of wintry weather hazards for some parts of the country.

Aidan McGivern, speaking on the latest Met Office Deep Dive, explained, “A cold front from the north towards the weekend will mark another change in the airmass for the UK, moving from something with a bit of an Atlantic influence to air that comes more directly from the Arctic.

This upcoming front will bring rainfall to northern areas, with western Scotland likely to receive the most precipitation. However, its primary significance lies in reinforcing the cold conditions as we enter the following week.

Will Lang, Met Office Head of Situational Awareness, highlighted the resurgence of cold weather, stating, “There will be a resurgence in the really cold weather through the weekend and that spreads across the whole of the UK during the early part of next week. Initially, this means there will be more in the way of showers around the coasts, turning increasingly to snow for many areas, especially further north.”

Looking ahead to next week, Aidan McGivern described the anticipated weather pattern, “We start with a northerly airflow and snow showers, especially near the coasts in the north. But there will also be brighter skies for some. Then, from the middle of next week, low-pressure tries to move in from the southwest, and the impact of this is still a bit uncertain at this range.”

The intensity, location, and impacts of any potential snowfall next week remain uncertain, with further details expected to be clarified in the coming days. Nevertheless, winter weather hazards continue to be a focal point of concern as we progress through the week.
