In the coldest night of the year, UK lifeboats were called to a critical rescue operation involving four migrant vessels in a standoff with two French warships. Migrants threatened to jump into the icy waters to avoid being stopped from crossing into English waters, leading to a dramatic rescue mission by lifeboats from Dungeness and Eastbourne and two Border Force Vessels.
Tense Standoff in Freezing Conditions
The standoff unfolded as temperatures plummeted to minus 7 degrees Celsius. Approximately 85 individuals were believed to be onboard the migrant vessels during this perilous situation. The migrants, determined to reach English waters, were in a tense face-off with French warships, leading to fears for their safety.

Major Rescue Operation
Responding to the urgency, lifeboats from Dungeness and Eastbourne were dispatched to the scene. Additionally, Coastguard spotter plane 224 was called in after one of the distressed vessels went missing. Eastbourne lifeboat conducted a thorough search following reports of a blue light, possibly from a search and rescue vessel involved in the recovery of three previous migrant vessels.

Safe Recovery of Migrants
A total of 120 plus migrants were brought ashore, equipped with Pulsar Thermal Overalls and some wrapped in Metal foil Blankets to protect them from the severe cold just after midnight onto Sunday morning. Upon their arrival, paramedics were on hand to check for signs of hypothermia among the rescued individuals.

Emergency Services’ Swift Response
The quick response of the UK lifeboats and the Coastguard played a crucial role in preventing a potential tragedy in the frigid temperatures. The operation highlights the ongoing challenges and risks faced by migrants attempting to cross into English waters, especially during extreme weather conditions.
Ongoing Concerns
This incident raises further concerns about the dangers migrants face during such crossings. The collaboration between UK and French authorities continues to be crucial in managing these complex and often hazardous situations.
