Public Health Warning Issued as Fire Breaks Out in Derelict Building in Chatham

Residents in Chatham are being urged to keep windows and doors closed after a fire broke out in a derelict building on Ordnance Street this afternoon.

Six fire engines and a height vehicle from Kent Fire and Rescue Service are currently tackling the blaze, which is producing significant amounts of smoke over the Medway area.

Public Safety Alert Issued

The fire service is working alongside Kent Police, and emergency crews remain on the scene as firefighters work to extinguish the flames and prevent the fire from spreading.

A spokesperson for Kent Fire and Rescue said:

“People living or travelling near Ordnance Street in Chatham are advised to close windows and doors due to smoke coming from the fire. Crews are working hard to bring the incident under control.”

At this stage, the cause of the fire remains unknown, and there are no reports of injuries.

Road Closures & Ongoing Response

Emergency services have put cordons in place, and traffic disruption in the area is likely. Local residents are advised to avoid the immediate vicinity of Ordnance Street while operations continue.
