Cameron Baker, a 28old man from Sandown, Isle of Wight, has been convicted of murdering cricketer Thomas Barton
The verdict was delivered at Winchester Crown Court after Baker was found to have fatally stabbed Barton in an incident on Park Road, Ryde, in the early hours of May 28.
The confrontation arose after Barton witnessed Baker holding hands with his ex-girlfriend, Sammi Creed, outside a bar in Ryde the previous evening. According to the prosecution, led by Christopher Quinlan KC, Creed had been holding Baker’s hand because he was intoxicated. When Barton confronted them, saying, “You going to do me like that?,” Creed released Baker’s hand.
Following this incident, the group, including a second man, Rio Scott, also 28, from Ryde, visited other bars before returning to Scott’s residence on Park Road. Later, Barton, accompanied by his 84-year-old father, arrived at Scott’s home. After failing to get a response at the door, they briefly left but returned a short while later. Barton, who played cricket for clubs in Ryde, Ventnor, and Lymington, intended to confront the group but was then attacked and suffered multiple stab wounds.
Despite the efforts of public members and emergency services, Barton died at the scene. During the investigation, both Baker and Scott were arrested. Baker claimed self-defense in his interview, while Scott maintained he was not involved in the incident.
Scott was acquitted of murder and manslaughter charges and released. Meanwhile, Baker has been remanded in custody, with sentencing scheduled for a later date as decided by the judge, Mrs. Justice Cockerill. The case has brought attention to the serious consequences of interpersonal conflicts and the tragic loss of life in this incident.
