Brighton’s RNLI lifeboat crew was called into action twice yesterday 26th March 2025 as thick coastal fog created hazardous conditions for water users.
The first incident unfolded at 10:13am, when a lone female paddleboarder near King’s Esplanade vanished into fog for over 15 minutes. An onlooker, concerned she was not wearing a life jacket, raised the alarm. The volunteer lifeboat crew used onboard radar to navigate through the dense fog, but the paddleboarder was eventually found safe onshore.
Later, at 2:45pm, a second call was received after a spear fisherman failed to resurface near Brighton Palace Pier. The diver, last seen at 2:25pm, had been submerged in low-visibility waters with jet skis in the area. Fortunately, he was located unharmed, sitting on a ledge beneath the pier.
Charlie Dannreuther, Brighton’s new Lifeboat Operations Manager, said:
“Fog can make the sea incredibly disorientating – both for those in the water and those trying to spot them from shore. We’re relieved both people were found safe, but these calls highlight the need for proper preparation and awareness of changing sea conditions.”
The RNLI is urging all coastal visitors to follow key safety advice in foggy conditions:
- Check weather and tide forecasts before setting out
- Avoid poor visibility conditions whenever possible
- Always wear a life jacket or buoyancy aid
- Carry a means of calling for help, like a waterproofed mobile or VHF radio
- Inform someone of your plans and return time
