Brighton’s RNLI lifeboat team had a busy start to the week, with two separate callouts within just over twelve hours.
The first incident occurred shortly before midday on Sunday, 21 April, when the crew was alerted to a capsized catamaran near Hove Lawns Café. Upon arrival, the RNLI team conducted a shoreline search and discovered that the catamaran had righted itself and was heading back to shore safely, allowing the crew to stand down.
The second emergency unfolded in the early hours of Monday, 22 April, when a distress call was received at 12:20 AM concerning a vessel reportedly in trouble just outside Brighton Marina. The vessel was exhibiting navigation lights suggesting movement and was not responding to radio communications, prompting immediate action from the RNLI team.
Launching their lifeboat, the RNLI crew located an 80ft yacht anchored just south of the Marina entrance. Despite their efforts, they were unable to make contact with anyone on board. Fortunately, the yacht was well anchored and did not pose a risk to other water users, leading the crew to stand down at 1:11am.
The RNLI emphasises the importance of safety on the water and encourages anyone who finds themselves in trouble, or spots someone else in difficulty, to call 999 and ask for the coastguard.
