Blackwall Tunnel Southbound Closures for Silvertown Tunnel Project
Blackwall Tunnel Southbound Closures for Silvertown Tunnel Project

The Blackwall Tunnel will close to southbound traffic for two weekends this month as part of essential work for the Silvertown Tunnel Project. The scheduled closures are:

  • Overnight from 11pm on Friday, October 11, to 5am on Saturday, October 12
  • Overnight from 11pm on Friday, October 18, to 5am on Saturday, October 19

During these times, the tunnel will remain open to northbound traffic, though some diversions may occur. Routine maintenance closures will also continue as usual, taking place from 11.59pm on Saturdays to 7am on Sundays.

Transport for London (TfL) has warned drivers to expect significant delays on roads and alternative river crossings in east and central London during the closures, particularly along the A13 and Rotherhithe Tunnel. For central London journeys, TfL advises using Tube and rail services whenever possible.

The Woolwich Ferry will operate as normal, though long queues are expected, potentially affecting boarding times. Bus Route 108 will continue to operate as usual despite the overnight works.

The Silvertown Tunnel project involves constructing a new road tunnel beneath the River Thames to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion in east London. The new 1.4km tunnel will connect the Royal Docks and Greenwich Peninsula, featuring a dedicated bus lane to enhance public transport. First proposed in 2012 and approved by the Secretary of State for Transport in 2018, the project aims to boost connectivity and support economic growth in the area.

Once the Silvertown Tunnel opens, drivers or vehicles not eligible for discounts or exemptions will need to pay a user charge for both the Blackwall and Silvertown tunnels. The charge will vary depending on the vehicle type, direction of travel, time of day, and payment method.
