BBC iPlayer to Remove Desktop Downloads App, Sparking Outcry from Users

The BBC has announced a significant change to its iPlayer service that will impact thousands of users, particularly those who rely on downloading content for offline viewing.

Starting from March, the Desktop Downloads App will be removed from Windows and Mac devices, effectively ending the option to download content for offline viewing on computers. Users will no longer be able to download their favorite BBC shows to watch later, a feature often used by those with poor internet connections or during travel.

The corporation stated that the Desktop Downloads App will cease to be available from March 11, with existing downloads becoming inaccessible from April 8. The decision has sparked frustration among users who rely on this feature.

The affected devices include Windows PCs running Windows 10 and Windows 11, as well as Apple MacBook devices, including MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, and MacBooks.

While the removal of the Desktop Downloads App will affect computer users, those using smartphones and tablets will remain unaffected. The iPlayer app on devices such as iPhones, Galaxy smartphones, and iPads will still support downloading shows for offline viewing.

The announcement has drawn criticism online, with users expressing disappointment and frustration over the decision. One user, Jo, lamented the loss of the feature, highlighting its importance for individuals with unreliable internet connections.

As the BBC moves forward with these changes, affected users are advised to explore alternative methods for accessing their favourite BBC content offline.
