In a heartfelt tribute to the late TV and radio presenter, Paul O’Grady, Battersea Dogs and Cats Home has announced that its upcoming veterinary hospital will bear his name. O’Grady, who passed away in March at the age of 67, had been an ambassador for Battersea since 2012, gaining immense popularity through the award-winning ITV series, For The Love Of Dogs.
Following O’Grady’s demise, Battersea established a “tribute fund” in his honour, which has successfully raised £480,000 to date. Out of this fund, £100,000 will be allocated to five other animal charities close to the entertainer’s heart. Among the recipients are charities in O’Grady’s hometown of Liverpool, including Freshfields Animal Rescue, Carla Lane Animals In Need, and The Oldies Club.
StreetVet, a charity providing veterinary care to pets of people experiencing homelessness, and the RSPCA Ashford Garden Cattery, where O’Grady served as president, will also benefit from the tribute fund.
Expressing his gratitude, O’Grady’s husband, Andre Portasio, remarked, “Seeing how loved Paul was by so many has been truly touching. Paul was so passionate in his support of rescue animals, and it gives me some comfort to know that through the hard work and commitment of Battersea and other charities Paul’s legacy will live on.”
Peter Laurie, the chief executive of Battersea Dogs & Cats Home, acknowledged the outpouring of support, stating, “It really is a testament to how loved Paul was, and we shall always be forever grateful for everything he did for us.” Laurie highlighted O’Grady’s significant contributions during his 11 years of filming For The Love Of Dogs, emphasising how the late ambassador championed the cause of underprivileged animals.
Naming the veterinary hospital after Paul O’Grady is seen as a fitting tribute to a man who dedicated himself to the welfare of animals, leaving a lasting legacy in the hearts of those touched by his compassion and advocacy.
