Police Deny Asylum Seeker Rumours After Reported Rape in Barnehurst

Police investigating the alleged rape of a teenage girl in Barnehurst earlier this week have dismissed online speculation that the suspects are asylum seekers.

The Metropolitan Police confirmed that the incident was reported on Monday, 4 August, and involves a teenage girl who says she was assaulted by two older teenage boys.

In a statement released today, Detective Superintendent Mel Pressley, the local policing lead for Bexley, said:

“Despite online commentary we can confirm the suspects are not asylum seekers.
“We have also confirmed with partners that a nearby block of flats in Perry Street is not being used to house asylum seekers.”

She added:

“Our focus remains on supporting the victim and establishing the circumstances of the incident.”

Police say they have conducted extensive enquiries and have identified two suspects. Officers are actively working to locate them and progress the investigation.

The assault is understood to have taken place in the Barnehurst area and has prompted widespread concern in the local community.

The teenage victim is receiving ongoing support from specially trained officers, and police are appealing for the public to avoid speculation as it risks damaging the investigation and community cohesion.

Authorities have pledged to release further updates as the case develops.

Anyone with information that may assist the investigation is urged to call 101, quoting reference 4054/05AUG, or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
