Man Arrested on Suspicion of Arson After Fire at Erith Pier – UKNIP

A man has been arrested on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life following a fire at Erith Pier in south-east London.

Emergency services were called to the scene at around 17:00hrs on Friday, 9 May. Officers from the Metropolitan Police responded alongside the London Fire Brigade, who worked swiftly to bring the blaze under control.

Fortunately, no injuries or casualties were reported.

A 43-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of arson with intent to endanger life. He was taken into custody, where he remains while enquiries continue.

Ongoing Investigation

The cause of the fire is being investigated, and forensic teams are expected to return to the scene over the weekend. Police have not yet confirmed whether the fire was targeted or accidental in origin.

A police spokesperson said:

“We are treating this incident seriously due to the potential risk to public safety. Thankfully, no one was hurt, but the consequences could have been far worse.”
