Aldi has urgently recalled its Gianni’s Cheeky Monkey Ice Cream after discovering the 500ml tubs contain undeclared wheat (gluten), posing a serious health risk for allergy sufferers. The recall applies to products with a best before date of 14 August 2027.
Gluten Danger Sparks Recall
The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has warned that this recall is crucial for anyone with coeliac disease or a wheat/gluten allergy or intolerance. The ice cream tubs don’t list wheat as an ingredient, meaning unsuspecting customers could suffer a severe reaction.
“This means the product is a possible health risk for anyone with coeliac disease and/or an allergy or intolerance to wheat (gluten),” the FSA alert states.
Aldi is displaying point-of-sale notices in stores selling the product, urging customers who bought it and suffer from these conditions to return it immediately for a full refund. The retailer stresses: do not eat it if you have a wheat or gluten allergy.
Why Coeliac Sufferers Must Avoid Gluten
Coeliac disease is an autoimmune disorder where gluten causes the immune system to attack the small intestine, leading to nutrient absorption issues. Symptoms of gluten intolerance include diarrhoea, bloating, and abdominal pain.
The NHS explains, “Your immune system attacks your own tissues when you eat gluten. This damages your gut (small intestine) so your body cannot properly take in nutrients.”
