A27 Near Falmer Closed After Serious Collision Causes Severe Delays

A serious collision on the A27 has led to the closure of a section of the highway between Falmer and Lewes. The incident occurred in the early hours of the morning, prompting a response from the police and ambulance services. Accident investigation work is currently underway at the scene.

The closure of this key road has resulted in severe traffic disruptions and diversions. Commuters are facing extensive delays, and traffic congestion has been reported on various alternative routes.

As a result of the A27 closure, the A259, which runs from Rottingdean to Seaford, is experiencing significant delays, with congestion stretching along this route in both directions. Motorists heading to work during rush hour have reported delays of more than two hours along the A259.

Furthermore, traffic is being diverted, leading to congestion in Lewes along Brighton Road and along the A27’s eastern side, as well as in Patcham.

Sussex Police have issued a statement confirming the closure and the severity of the collision. According to a police spokesperson, a serious single-vehicle collision occurred on the A27 eastbound between Falmer and Lewes shortly before 3 am. Due to the need for forensics and recovery, the road will remain closed in both directions for a significant period.

Authorities have urged commuters to exercise patience and seek alternative routes if possible, as the closure is expected to persist for “quite some time.” The closure affects a stretch of the A27 between B2123 The Drove (Falmer/Rottingdean Junction) and A277 Brighton Road (Ashcombe Roundabout).

Traffic diversions have been put in place to manage the situation, but delays and congestion are expected to continue throughout the morning. Authorities are prioritizing accident investigation and recovery efforts to ensure the safety and wellbeing of road users.

Motorists and residents are advised to monitor local traffic updates for the latest information and to plan their journeys accordingly to avoid further disruptions caused by this serious collision on the A27.
