The A27 has been closed in both directions this afternoon due to an ongoing police incident, causing long delays and severe congestion in and around Lewes.
The closure stretches from the Ashcombe Roundabout to the Southerham Roundabout (A26), with traffic tailing back onto surrounding routes as drivers attempt to divert through the town.
The incident was first reported shortly after 1:00pm, and emergency services remain at the scene. Details of the nature of the police incident have not yet been confirmed.
Motorists are facing major disruption, with long queues building on nearby routes, particularly as traffic diverts through Lewes town centre and surrounding areas.
Travel services are urging road users to avoid the area if possible and to allow extra time for journeys.
A spokesperson said:
“The A27 remains closed in both directions between Ashcombe Roundabout and the A26 Southerham Roundabout due to an ongoing police incident. Please seek alternative routes where possible.”
The closure is expected to remain in place for some time while police deal with the incident and traffic management measures are put in place.
