James Andrew Darnton, 51, is charged in connection with a 2009 incident involving a woman.
He works as a temporary detective inspector in Greater Manchester Police’s public protection governance unit.
In October 2021, a report on the incident was received.
Darnton is scheduled to appear in Liverpool Crown Court on July 10, 2023.
He was suspended, and professional proceedings will resume after the court hearings.
