Kent Police was called to assist Kent Fire and Rescue Service following three car fires in Queens Road late in the evening of Tuesday 18 July and in the early hours of Wednesday 19 July 2023.

The fires, which were extinguished with no reported injuries, were deemed to be suspicious and, following enquiries, a suspect was arrested the same morning.

Jonathan Smith, of Chilton Place, Ash, has since been charged with three counts of arson by officers from Dover’s Victim Based Crime Team.

The 44-year-old appeared before Folkestone Magistrates’ Court on Thursday 20 July and was remanded in custody to appear at Canterbury Crown Court on Monday 21 August.
