Early Morning Blaze Claims Life of Elderly Man in Old Coulsdon

A 77-year-old man has tragically died in a house fire on Coulsdon Road, Old Coulsdon, in the early hours of Sunday, May 25.

The London Fire Brigade responded to emergency calls at 1:38am, dispatching crews from Purley, Wallington, and Croydon fire stations. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus rescued the man from the first floor via an internal staircase, but he was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

Fire Destroys Large Portions of Home

The blaze caused extensive damage, with half of the ground and first floors of the semi-detached house destroyed. The property is located next to Keston Primary School. The fire was brought under control by 3:00am.

A Metropolitan Police spokesperson confirmed the victim’s age and said he was found trapped on the staircase. No arrests have been made, and the cause of the fire is under investigation.

Forensic Investigation Underway

Forensic teams continued working at the site throughout Sunday to determine what triggered the blaze. As of now, no foul play is suspected.

The London Fire Brigade issued a statement saying:

“Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus rescued one man from the first floor using an internal staircase. Sadly, the man died at the scene.”
