70 Firefighters Tackle Major Flat Fire in West Hampstead

A significant fire broke out in a converted end-of-terrace house on Lyncroft Gardens, West Hampstead, during the early hours of Thursday, November 28. The blaze prompted a major emergency response involving ten fire engines and approximately 70 firefighters.

Extent of Damage

The fire caused extensive damage, destroying half of the roof and affecting a portion of a third-floor flat. Fortunately, 25 residents were evacuated to safety, and there were no reported injuries.

Emergency Response

Station Commander Ken Spratt, who led the firefighting efforts, said:

“One of the Brigade’s 64-metre turntable ladders was used as a water tower to tackle the fire from height. Drones were deployed to survey the incident, providing an aerial view to aid in developing tactics.”

Residents evacuated from the affected property were accommodated at West Hampstead Fire Station, which was set up as a rest center for those impacted.

Timeline of Events

  • 03:09: The first emergency call was made.
  • 05:23: The fire was brought under control.
Fire crews from West Hampstead, Paddington, North Kensington, Hendon, and surrounding areas responded to the scene.

Cause of the Fire

The fire is believed to have been accidental, caused by hot works that had been conducted on the property earlier.

Safety Measures

The London Fire Brigade (LFB) has issued a reminder to ensure that safety precautions are followed when carrying out hot works, such as welding or cutting, to prevent accidental fires.

The incident has left several residents temporarily displaced, and authorities are working to support those affected.
