Fire Crews Tackle Blaze at Derelict Church in Southborough

Residents warned to keep windows shut as flames tear through Vale Road site

Firefighters rushed to the scene of a fire at a derelict church in Vale Road, Southborough, this evening (September 1).

Emergency services were alerted just before 6pm following reports of flames and heavy smoke rising from the disused religious building.

Thick smoke over Southborough

Large plumes of smoke could be seen drifting across the town, prompting safety advice for people living nearby to keep their windows and doors closed.

The Kent Fire and Rescue Service also urged drivers to avoid the area, with congestion building on London Road and Vale Road, which have both been sealed off by police.

Firefighters in attendance

A service spokesperson said:

“Four fire engines are currently in attendance, and crews wearing breathing apparatus are using hose-reel jets and main jets to extinguish the flames.
A height vehicle is also being used at the scene.”

Photos from Vale Road show firefighters working in breathing apparatus and a height vehicle deployed to target the roof of the derelict church from above.

Roads remain closed

Cordons remain in place while fire crews continue to dampen down the building.

Residents are being asked to share the warning with neighbours and loved ones who may not have access to the internet.
