A Man Caught Driving Almost Twice The Legal Limit On The M4 Has Appeared In Court

Daniel Stewart, 34, of Strouds Close, Swindon, was driving a BMW 440I Sport on the M4 near to Chippenham shortly before midnight on May 26 when he was sighted by a Roads Policing Officer who recorded his speed as 135mph.

Officers stopped the vehicle and Stewart was issued with a Traffic Offence Report.

He appeared at Swindon Magistrates Court on February 21 and pleaded guilty to speeding.

He was fined £320, disqualified from driving for 90 days and ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £34 and £85 Crown Prosecution Costs.

PC Steve Harding said: “Stewart was driving at almost twice the legal limit when he was caught – this is completely unacceptable.

“Although the M4 appeared to be relatively clear at the time, there can be various hazards on the motorway at this time of night, ranging from wildlife in the carriageway to obstructions such as damage to the road surface or debris from HGVs – if presented with any type of hazard, Stewart would never have been able to stop safely or be able to safely take avoiding action, putting his life and the lives of other road users at risk.”
