In a recent wave of vandalism, individuals have utilized stickers bearing the likeness of London Mayor Sadiq Khan to obstruct cameras associated with the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) in Orpington. This incident has disrupted traffic management in the area, resulting in significant consequences, including a car crash involving a six-year-old girl due to inoperative traffic lights on Court Road.
The collision occurred at approximately 8:30 am on a Thursday and involved a vehicle carrying a young girl and an adult. Both individuals have been transported to a hospital for medical assessment, with reports suggesting that their injuries are not life-threatening.
The vandalism primarily targeted traffic lights at five different locations within Orpington. In some instances, the ULEZ cameras were damaged along with the traffic lights. These acts of criminal damage have had severe repercussions, requiring the deployment of two police units that would have otherwise been available for emergency calls.
Chief Inspector Priya Shome, stationed in Bromley, expressed deep concern over the situation, emphasizing the risks posed to public safety by these acts of vandalism. She highlighted the instance of a car collision at the intersection of Court Road and Old Priory Avenue, where one of the damaged traffic lights was located. To obstruct the ULEZ camera, a sticker featuring Sadiq Khan’s image, along with the word ‘liar’ inscribed on his forehead, was affixed to the device.
Shome urged those responsible for these crimes to cease their actions immediately and contemplate the potential dangers they are inflicting upon road users. The incidents of vandalism not only disrupt the flow of traffic but also pose serious threats to the safety of individuals navigating the affected areas.
Local residents reported disturbances during the night at approximately 11:30 pm, followed by a loud crash coinciding with the vehicular collision. The incidents underscore the importance of addressing the issue promptly to ensure the safety and functionality of traffic management systems in Orpington.
