Body Found in River Days After Disappearance Sparks Murder Probe

South Yorkshire Police have arrested a man on suspicion of murder after the body of a missing person was discovered in a river near Treeton Lane, Rotherham, just two days after he vanished.

Emergency services were alerted shortly after 12:15pm on Saturday, 10 May, to concerns over the man’s disappearance. Following urgent enquiries, officers conducted a search of the nearby river and located a man’s body at 7:15pm.

Although formal identification has not yet taken place, the family of the missing man have been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers.

Murder Arrest Confirmed

A 42-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in custody as detectives continue to investigate.

A South Yorkshire Police spokesperson confirmed:

We are in the early stages of a murder investigation following the discovery of a man’s body in a river. A 42-year-old man is currently in custody. Our thoughts are with the family at this difficult time.”

‘Increased Police Presence’ in Rotherham Area

Detective Chief Inspector Ben Wood, leading the investigation, stated:

“We understand how shocking this news will be to the local community. We are working extremely hard to determine exactly what happened. Officers will remain in the area over the coming days—please approach them with any concerns or information.”

Public Urged to Come Forward

Police are urging anyone with relevant information to contact 101, quoting incident number 418 of 10 May 2025, or to submit tips anonymously via Crimestoppers at 0800 555 111.

“No detail is too small,” added DCI Wood. “Help us provide answers to a grieving family.”
