In a tragic incident that occurred on June 21 last year, Sakunthala Francis, an 89-year-old woman, suffered fatal stab injuries at a residence in Brigstock Road, Thornton Heath. The London Ambulance Service alerted the police, who arrived at the scene shortly after 9.20 pm. Despite their efforts, the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
The grandson of the deceased, Verushan Manoharan, aged 32 and residing in Kingsley Road, Croydon, was charged with her murder and was set to stand trial next month.
However, during a plea hearing held on Monday at the Old Bailey before Judge Nigel Lickley, the defendant chose to admit to a lesser charge. Verushan Manoharan denied the accusation of murder but pleaded guilty to the offence of manslaughter. This plea followed the preparation of psychiatric reports.
In light of this development, Judge Lickley adjourned the sentencing until August 18 and remanded the defendant into custody.
The tragic incident has deeply affected the local community and the family involved. The loss of an elderly family member under such circumstances is undoubtedly devastating for all those affected.
