Tragedy struck the quiet neighbourhood of Shevington, Wigan, on November 24, 2022, when the lifeless body of Liam Smith, a 38-year-old father-of-two, was discovered at the bottom of his driveway on Kilburn Drive. As the trial for murder commenced at Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court, it was revealed that the accused, Michael Hillier, admitted to manslaughter but denied the charge of murder.
Hillier, a 39-year-old resident of Ecclesall Road in Sheffield, stood in court and confessed to his involvement in the incident, acknowledging his responsibility in the death of Mr Smith. Co-defendant Rachel Fulstow, a 37-year-old resident of York, pleaded not guilty to both murder and manslaughter charges. Additionally, Ms Fulstow, who resides at Andrew Drive, denied allegations of perverting the course of justice between January 21 and February 21, 2023.
Presiding over the case, Justice Maurice Greene addressed the jury, emphasizing the significance of Mr Smith’s untimely demise. He requested that emotions be set aside throughout the proceedings and that judgments be based solely on the evidence presented in court. Recognizing the gravity of the situation, the judge anticipated a trial duration of up to four weeks to thoroughly examine the facts surrounding this tragic incident.
