Historic Mansion Severely Damaged in Early Morning Blaze
A major fire has devastated the £4.5 million Grade II-listed Hollybush House on Hadley Green Road in Barnet, north London. The blaze erupted shortly after 1am on Monday, May 26, tearing through the historic mansion located on the area’s prestigious Millionaires’ Row.
The London Fire Brigade (LFB) confirmed that 70 firefighters and ten fire engines were deployed at the height of the emergency. Fire crews battled for over six hours, bringing the fire under control by 7.15am.
Roof Collapse and Structural Damage
The Georgian six-bedroom mansion—built in the late 18th century—suffered a partial roof collapse, with flames engulfing the first and ground floors. The property was undergoing refurbishment, and scaffolding surrounded the building at the time of the incident. Photos show damage to the adjoining cottage, although firefighters worked hard to protect it from total loss.
Firefighting Strategy and Community Safety
According to the LFB, a 32-metre turntable ladder was used to tackle the blaze from above. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
An LFB spokesperson stated:
“The whole of the roof, as well as the first and ground floors of a detached house under refurbishment, are alight. Firefighters will remain at the scene into the afternoon.”
A Landmark Property in Barnet
Hollybush House last sold in 2020 for £4.5 million, and featured a 2.23-acre garden, three terraces, a pond, and a swimming pool. The mansion stands as one of Hadley Green’s most valuable properties, a neighbourhood known for its grand homes and famous residents including explorer David Livingstone and author Fanny Trollope.
Public Advisory
Local residents were advised to keep windows and doors closed due to the heavy smoke. Firefighters have since launched drone operations to assess the structural integrity and spread of the fire.
