Sian Doyle, the former head of the Welsh broadcaster S4C, has been urgently admitted to a hospital after an apparent overdose. This distressing development occurred in the wake of a critical report about her tenure at S4C, which was released just a day earlier.
Her husband, Rob Doyle, discovered her in an unresponsive state on Thursday morning. In a heart-wrenching statement, he revealed, “This morning my wife, Sian, was rushed to the hospital. She had taken an overdose during the night and was unresponsive when I tried to wake her.”
The report in question, issued by the S4C board, drew on testimonies from numerous individuals within the organization. It painted a controversial picture of Ms. Doyle’s leadership, leading to significant media scrutiny.
Rob Doyle, in a statement released through a London-based PR firm to Newyddion S4C, expressed his anguish, stating, “The last 24 hours have seen my wife torn apart in the media after an exceptional 30-year international career because of a one-sided report, commissioned and directed by S4C’s chairman.”
Capital Law’s investigation involved interviews with 92 individuals who provided insights into the working environment under Ms. Doyle’s leadership. The BECTU union alleged that she fostered a ‘culture of fear’ during her time as the chief executive. However, Ms. Doyle has consistently refuted these allegations.
In a poignant reflection, Mr. Doyle condemned the report as ‘an assassination of her character’ and the ‘last straw’ in a series of events that led to the current crisis. He remarked, “Sian was so proud to have been asked to come out of retirement to lead an organization that, as a young girl, she campaigned to set up. But that pride turned into frustration, and then to disappointment, fear, and finally despair.”
He also pointed to the role of the S4C board and its chairman in the saga, accusing them of neglecting their duty of care towards his wife and failing to provide adequate oversight or challenge to the chairman’s actions.
