David Hollick, a 29-year-old man from Primley Avenue, Walsall, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for the manslaughter of his six-month-old son, Kairo Hollick. The heartbreaking case, which shook the community, culminated in a trial at Birmingham Crown Court.
The tragic events unfolded on February 12, 2020, at Birmingham Children’s Hospital, where Kairo Hollick lost his life after suffering severe injuries. The life support system was switched off after medical experts determined that his injuries were not survivable. The court heard that Kairo was initially taken to Walsall Manor Hospital on Sunday, February 9, 2020, by his father, who reported finding the infant floppy and unresponsive. David Hollick claimed he had shaken Kairo in an attempt to revive him, but tragically, his efforts were in vain.

Medical examinations revealed the devastating extent of Kairo’s injuries, including bleeding in his brain and two complex skull fractures caused by blunt force trauma. Additionally, he had a fractured arm, all pointing to severe physical abuse.
During the trial, David Hollick initially did not explain the injuries sustained by his son. However, he later testified that he had fallen while holding Kairo. Despite his claims of innocence, the jury found him guilty of manslaughter.
The sentencing hearing was filled with emotion as Kairo’s mother, who was no longer living with David Hollick at the time of their son’s death, expressed her profound grief and pain. In a statement, she said, “It has been four years since we lost Kairo, and our hearts remain shattered. He deserved safety and care from his father, and he deserved to be with us today. The brutality inflicted on Kairo will haunt our family forever. Kai was the light of our lives, the embodiment of innocence. Without him, we are broken.”
The sentencing of David Hollick serves as a reminder of the devastating consequences of child abuse and neglect. The court’s decision sends a strong message that such actions will not be tolerated, and perpetrators will be held accountable for their crimes. As the community mourns the loss of young Kairo, efforts must continue to ensure the safety and protection of all children.
