A significant victory for justice and a young victim occurred as a 38-year-old man, David Kidd of Appleford Court, Basildon, was convicted of sexually assaulting a girl under the age of 10. Specialist officers swiftly acted upon the victim’s report in November 2020, leading to Kidd’s arrest and subsequent conviction.
The victim, whose identity remains protected due to her young age, bravely came forward to report the sexual assault she endured at the hands of the accused. Following her courageous act, dedicated specialist officers from the Child Abuse Investigation Team supported her throughout the harrowing legal process, designed specifically to address child sexual offences and support victims.
Upon apprehending Kidd, he made notable comments to the arresting officers, providing chilling evidence of his actions. A search of his residence yielded crucial evidence in the form of mobile phones and a laptop, which were subjected to forensic examination. Disturbingly, the examination revealed internet searches related to children and indecent images of children.
In September 2021, Kidd faced two charges of sexually assaulting a girl under 13 and three charges of making indecent images of children. Throughout the legal proceedings, he maintained his plea of not guilty, causing delays due to the Covid-19 pandemic and barrister strike action. However, on the second day of the trial at Basildon Crown Court on Tuesday, 18 July, he had a change of heart and finally admitted to all charges against him.
The victim and her family were supported by the officers throughout this emotionally challenging process. DS Ellie Nudd, the officer in charge of the case, empathised with the difficulties faced by the young victim and her loved ones, given her tender age and the lengthy court process. Despite Kidd’s initial denial, the strength of the case and the victim’s unwavering determination ultimately led to his confession, sparing the victim from the distress of a trial.
The sentencing of David Kidd is set to take place on Friday, 8 September, at the same court.
