A busy London tube station was evacuated today after smoke was spotted coming from one of the carriages. Transport for London (TfL) Access confirmed on X (formerly known as Twitter) that Bank station was closed around 5 p.m. on October 8 due to the incident.
Emergency services rushed to the scene, with several eyewitnesses on social media describing the situation. One user posted, “Bank Station evacuated. Lots of smoke and burning stink on southbound Northern line train on the platform.”
A spokesperson for TfL reported that the smoke was caused by a faulty train on the Northern Line. It looks as though there might be an issue with it. There’s a bit of smoke coming from one of the carriages, so we’ve cleared the station and are checking it out,” they explained. The fire brigade is on the way, which is standard procedure when smoke is involved. We hope to reopen the station as soon as we’ve assessed the situation.
Bank station has since reopened after the all-clear was given by emergency services.
Further details are being sought from British Transport Police, London Fire Brigade, and London Ambulance Service regarding the incident. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported at this time.
