A tragic incident has occurred in Dagenham, resulting in the closure of a major road following a fatal crash. Emergency services responded to Leys Avenue, at the junction with A1112 Rainham Road South, following reports of a woman injured in a collision at 8.26am today (Friday, January 26).
Despite the swift response of officers and London Ambulance Service (LAS) paramedics, the woman involved in the incident was pronounced dead at the scene. As of Friday lunchtime, road closures are still in effect, and her next of kin have been notified.
Rainham Road South is currently closed in both directions due to ongoing police investigation work. The closure extends from Ballards Road / Esso Garage (Bull Roundabout) to A125 Rainham Road (Newtons Corner).
A spokesperson from the Metropolitan Police commented on the incident, stating, “Police were called at 8.26am to reports of a woman, believed to be in her 60s, who had sustained injuries after being struck by a vehicle in Leys Avenue, Dagenham. Officers and the London Ambulance Service attended, and the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.
The spokesperson continued, “Next of kin have been informed, and our thoughts are with the family at this sad time. We are aware of several rumours circulating on social media regarding the nature of this incident – this is being treated as a fatal road traffic collision.
Road closures surrounding the scene remain in effect. Authorities are appealing to anyone with information that could aid the investigation to contact 101 or ‘X’ @MetCC, quoting CAD1452/26Jan. Alternatively, information can be provided anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
The London Ambulance Service has been contacted for additional comments on the incident.
