In a startling discovery last night, a newborn baby girl was found abandoned in a shopping bag at the junction of Greenway and High Street South, E6, in Newham.
The infant, who was wrapped in a towel, was found by a vigilant passerby while out walking their dog.
Chief Superintendent Simon Crick, leading the policing efforts in Newham, reported that the baby is now safe and well, thanks to the quick thinking and compassion of the individual who found her.
The Good Samaritan ensured the baby remained warm until paramedics from the London Ambulance Service arrived. The medical team conducted a thorough check-up before transporting the baby to the hospital. Remarkably, the newborn showed no signs of injury and is currently under the care of hospital staff.
Chief Superintendent Crick expressed profound gratitude to those who remained at the scene to assist the officers and medical personnel, acknowledging that their actions played a pivotal role in saving the baby’s life.
While the baby’s immediate needs have been addressed, the police’s primary concern is now for the welfare of the baby’s mother.
Chief Superintendent Crick empathised with the trauma the mother must have experienced and underscored the urgent necessity for her to receive immediate medical attention. He reassured her that trained medical professionals and specialist officers were prepared to provide support and urged her to contact the nearest hospital or police station.
The baby was discovered at approximately 9.13pm on Thursday, January 18.
Following the discovery, the police have concluded their work at the scene, and the crime scene has been closed.
The police are actively coordinating with local hospitals and authorities and have issued an appeal for the child’s mother to come forward.
Additionally, they encourage anyone with information about the child’s mother to contact the Metropolitan Police at 999, referencing CAD 6876/18 Jan.
This incident has deeply affected the community, with many expressing their concern for the newborn and her mother.
The police emphasised that the mother’s well-being is of paramount importance and urged her to seek help immediately.
