Curtis Otley, a 20-year-old resident of Showering Road, Stockwood, has been handed an 18-year prison sentence by Bristol Crown Court for a series of appalling sexual offences committed against five girls, all under the age of 18. The court reached this decision yesterday, following Otley’s conviction in September on 12 charges, including rape, attempted rape, and sexual activity with a child. These crimes transpired between 2020 and 2023.
Otley’s victims, praised for their bravery by law enforcement, conveyed the profound and lasting impact his actions have had on their lives. In a victim statement read out in court, one girl expressed the fear that people wouldn’t believe her, highlighting the constant worry that lingered until the verdict was announced.
“I feel like Curtis has taken a large part of this away from me,” she lamented.
Another victim shared the pervasive effect, stating, “I don’t trust anyone at all anymore. I am quite reserved with male friends and find it difficult to let my guard down.”
The mother of one victim, speaking on behalf of her daughter, revealed the profound impact on her daughter’s perception of relationships with boys and men. She stated, “I have talked to her about future relationships with boys and men, when she’s older, and she said she’s not interested; she feels that boys and men can’t be trusted.”
The investigation, led by the Operation Topaz team dedicated to child sexual exploitation cases, underscored the importance of survivor bravery and the commitment of childcare professionals in various agencies. Detective Sergeant Erika Winbow emphasised the collective effort that brought Otley to justice, acknowledging the survivors, dedicated professionals, and community support.
Otley’s manipulative and controlling behaviour was a focal point during the trial, with authorities highlighting the threats he used against his victims. The case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of recognising and reporting child sexual exploitation. Authorities encourage the public to remain vigilant, reporting any concerns about child welfare. Detective Sergeant Winbow expressed gratitude to her team, including Officer in the Case DC Katrina Collier, for their hard work and determination leading to this significant court outcome.
