An off-duty police special constable has been hailed as a “true hero” after his courageous actions during a blazing fire on the M20 last Friday.
Michael, who serves as an inspector for the Met’s Special Constabulary, played a crucial role in ensuring the safety of all individuals at the scene of the fire. In addition to guiding people to safety, he promptly contacted the emergency services to respond to the incident.
A post on the Met Police’s Facebook page commended Michael for his remarkable efforts, noting that he continued to provide updates from the scene and collaborated closely with Kent’s Fire and Rescue teams upon their arrival.
Michael has been a dedicated volunteer with the Met’s Special Constabulary since 2011 and also serves as a specialist paramedic.
The swift and efficient response from all parties involved contributed to rapidly extinguishing the fire, with no reported injuries.
Members of the community were deeply moved by the off-duty officer’s bravery and quick thinking. One Facebook user, Andreea Ungureanu, praised him as a “true hero,” while another, Lisa Ditch, expressed admiration for his incredible actions.
The fire incident occurred around 1:45 pm on January 5, between Junction 1 for the M25 and Junction 2 for the A20. Local fire and rescue teams, equipped with breathing apparatus, swiftly arrived at the scene. Traffic in both directions was temporarily halted due to the fire involving a crane lorry, and drivers were advised to anticipate delays of up to half an hour.
The Kent Fire and Rescue Service dispatched three fire engines to manage the incident, ensuring a comprehensive response to the situation.
